Mau's martial arts training likely involved mostly spear/staff fighting in a formal sense, as well as hand-to-hand combat and a whole lot of rough-housing with other boys who all wanted to be warriors when they grew up. He isn't a master, but he's competent; he knows how to fall and throw kicks and punches, how to thrust and sweep and block with a spear, and the rules of ritual combat where he's from.
