This memory covers from a day after arriving back at the Nation until about a week later. The Nation is a mess, but a lot of people survived, and they're rebuilding already. Mau received his Sunset Wave tattoo (and the thing with the sharp knife where you do not scream :|b) at an extremely subdued and hurried manhood feast, because he did make it back and it would be dangerous and wrong not to give him his man's soul, no matter what disasters have happened.
His mother and older sister are alive -- they were up in the Women's Place. His father and most of his uncles are alive -- they were fishing. His little sister died. She was playing in the lagoon, and didn't make it to higher ground. Her body was not found. Several other young children died, as well as some men who were working in the lower fields, some women who were walking in the forest, and a few of the people who were out at sea. But most people survived -- it means that the whole island is short on supplies, but there's hunting and fishing and wild food, and dried stores in the Women's Place. Replanting is urgent business, though.
Refugees from other islands begin to show up, and the Nation takes them in. This makes supplies even tighter, obviously. People grumble, and some fights break out, but mostly the wave was bad enough that everybody wants to try to help each other. Ataba and the Unknown Woman arrive, and the baby is given to a local woman to wet-nurse.
This Mau is a man, technically, but still feels like a boy -- he's busy, worried and bewildered, and very sad about his sister and the other people who died, but he's not having any world-shattering epiphanies. He's not nearly as traumatized, and he's not chief.

Unlike regular memories where there is a strong sense of the emotions and sensations in a memory an alternity is more like watching it on TV. Your character is very aware this is someone else's life and while they may get some emotional impact from it -- it should be more like an information dump.
